UK festivals in September
Bestival
What: Rob da Bank's eccentric fancy dress knees-up on the Isle of Wight. Expect to see all sorts of oddities, join in with the biggest fancy dress party in the world and have heaps of fun. Living up to its name, this festival won Best Middle-Sized Festival at the UK Festival Awards in 2005 and 2006. It gets a big thumbs-up from us at TheSite.org too.
Dates: 7th - 9th September.
Where: The Isle of Wight.
Line-up: Beastie Boys, Chemical Brothers, Primal Scream. Others confirmed: The Gossip, Bats For Lashes, Mr Scruff, Tunng, Simple Kid and the Noisettes to name but a few.
Cost: £115 for adults for the whole weekend. If you are 16 or 17 you MUST be accompanied by a parent or guardian over the age of 21. There are a few more rules about this on the Bestival website.
Camping: Onsite and included in the ticket price if you're in a tent. £45 extra for campervans (which must actually be campervans and not transits with a mattress thrown in the back), and luxury options like beach huts and double-decker buses exist.
Transport: Train to Southampton or Portsmouth and then ferry. Buses run from the ferry to the festival site. You can't get on site on Thursday night, but there are plenty of places to camp for around a fiver each.
Parking: There are car parks within walking distance of the site - the track down is stony and steep, so wear sensible shoes and don't try and carry too much at once. There were accidents last time, and broken limbs are no fun at all when you are trying to dance.
End Of The Road
What: After going to Green Man festival in 2005, the organizers realized it was possible to put on a perfect festival without hyped-up bands, so that their fave line-up could play longer sets. 2006 saw acts such as I'm from Barcelona, Ed Harcourt, Josh Ritter and Darren Hayman all playing surprise sets in and around the festival site. It was also voted Best New Festival in the UK Festival Awards 2006, which bodes well.
Dates: 14th - 16th September.
Where: Larmer Tree Gardens, Dorset.
Line-up: No headliners, such things go against the spirit of this happy festival. But those confirmed include Super Furry Animals, The Broken Family Band, Charlie Parr, Euros Childs and The Young Republic. Film, comedy, workshops and an open mic space are also all part of the package.
Cost: £95 for an adult weekend ticket (aged 13+).
Camping: Is included in the ticket price and onsite. Campervan passes cost £30.
Transport: Directions.
Parking: Car Pass/Parking £5 (payable on arrival at site)
